Promoting Sustainability on Highways

The North Carolina Department of Transportation celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of its nationally recognized wildflower program this year. With a strong desire to build upon this legacy, the Department is implementing a new management strategy called the Clear Zone Improvement Program (C-ZIP).rnC-ZIP focuses upon maintaining or in some cases reestablishing the area between the pavement and the ditch. This area is referred to as the clear recovery zone or clear zone. Over time, because of reduced maintenance activities, trees havernbeen allowed to encroach upon these clear zones. This resulted in a reduction in the size of the grassy area utilized by motorists to slow errant vehicles and safely return them to the travel lane.
