Reduced Flooding and Improved Water Quality: Result of Collaborative Effort

A small community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is finding ways to work collaboratively with many different groups and individuals in order to solve some their community's biggest needs. Manheim is an urban borough located in northern Lancaster County - a region most well-known for the Amish residents that farm broad swaths of agricultural land using nonindustrial farm methods that rely on literal "horse" power. Ironically, the Manheim area is also home to the world's largest auto auction; however locally, it is also well known for historical flooding problems that continue to wreak havoc on a regular basis. This history stems from the fact that Manheim Borough is surrounded on three sides by the Chiques Creek and its tributaries - an upturned horseshoe of flowing water that becomes an unlucky border of swollen streambanks during storm events.
