Remote sensing: a useful tool in infrastructure planning

Even if all roads once led to Rome, whether they all received the proper amount of consideration during their planning and construction is questionable. Planners then were unlikely to have considered how much traffic there would be, whether the road would run through swamps, hostile areas, sanctuaries or mountains, how many rivers it would cross and how many bridges were needed. Unfortunately, the Quick Project Scan (QPS) was not available when the Via Appia was constructed. QPS is an instrument for designing and assessing plans for large-scale line infrastructure projects. QPS lists alternatives in the preparatory phase and systematically indicates the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives. It ensures that the best alternative is selected and that construction will be flexible. QPS was developed under the LWI and BCRS programme umbrella. Ballast Nedam, DHV, Grontmij, Haskoning, RWS and the IVM Institute of the Free University of Amsterdam participated in the development of QPS. GeoVision provides the satellite images.
