The Toolkit for Water Quality Continued Project, which is reported here, started in 1996 and is a continuation of previous activities with respect to the operationalization of remote sensing of water quality. It was preceded by the so called 'Toolkit I' and 'Toolkit II' projects. These were initialized after an inventory of user requirements with respect to water quality information and of gaps in the processing chain of water quality remote sensing data in 1994. The first goal of the Toolkit I project was to fill a gap with respect to the difficult problem of atmospheric correction and air water interface correction for this kind of data. Standardized validated tools for this purpose did not exist at that time. The closely related Toolkit II project aimed at making available validated operational tools for the estimation of water quality parameters from atmospherically corrected remote sensing data. The Toolkit I and II projects resulted in a joint prototype software system for the analysis and processing of remotely sensed water quality data. However, although this was an important step forward, an evaluation of the prototype Toolkit for Water Quality software revealed a number of required improvements.
