Dynamic Analysis of Moving Road Vehicle under a Sudden Crosswind

This paper presents an improved framework for performing dynamic analysis of road vehicle under a sudden crosswind in the time domain. The road vehicle is idealized as a combination of a number of rigid bodies connected by a series of springs and damping devices. The random roughness of road surface is generated from a power spectral density function for a given road condition. The quasi-steady model is employed to generate wind forces on the road vehicle. The equations of motion of the moving vehicle under a sudden crosswind are then established in consideration of the effects of both road surface roughness and crosswind. The application to a high-sided vehicle moving on the ground demonstrates that the improved framework and the associated computer program can efficiently predict dynamic response of moving road vehicles entering into a sharp edged crosswind. The computation results also indicate that the safety of the high-sided vehicle moving on the ground under a sudden crosswind is controlled mainly by overturning accident other than sideslip accident or rotation accident.
