WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIANS AND INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS

In her book, Web 2.0 for Librarians and Information Professionals, Ellyssa Kroski provides an accessible overview of Web 2.0 applications and services. Her expressed goal in introducing the novice information professional to these options is to present "the purpose, functionality, features, usage statistics, and software choices related to a major technology" (xiii). Kroski achieves her stated goal by presenting such technologies as personalized start pages, social news, productivity tools and virtual worlds alongside blogs, wikis, and social bookmarking. The inclusion of real-life applications showcases library work where these technologies have been implemented such as the Alliance Second Life Library, a virtual cooperative of libraries within the virtual world Second Life. In turn, these showcased projects serve as models for other libraries.
