Blender is a powerful open source 3-D-graphics software package. Blender combines with GIMP for 2-D image manipulation, allowing users to create professional 3-D images and animations. Blender Master Class covers the redesigned, 2.6x version of Blender, which is considered on par with commercial 3-D programs. Blender has a strong user community, which offers a conference, training, and the opportunity to become a certified trainer. For librarians wanting to enhance library Web sites with animations for promotions, tutorials, floor plans, and so forth, Blender is an excellent and free tool that runs on Windows or Macs. Learning 3-D graphics is no easy task, however. While the Blender Web site offers a variety of tutorials and documentation, Simonds's book is an excellent introduction and handbook for new and experienced users.
