Treasured Textiles - Cloth and Clothing Around the World

The Pitt Rivers Museum holds over four thousand textiles and costumes, the majority of which are held as reserve collections. The starting point for this exhibition was the desire to display more of this rich study material. To this end, my colleague Zena McGreevy and I worked through the reserve collections to select material for an exhibition illustrating the way that textile technique contributes to design, decoration and adornment. Although the pieces selected for Treasured Textiles have always been accessible to visiting researchers, this is the first time that many of them have been on public exhibition.
