Yarn Count and Sett

When I teach beginners to weave a common question is 'How do you know how close to set the warp?' When you know the rules this is quite straightforward but, whatever you calculate the sett to be, there is no substitute for weaving a sample as in practice yarns handle in some unexpected ways. Your calculations are only a guide. Each type of yarn has different properties when washed and you have to determine whether your finished cloth is to be a light, airy scarf or a piece of material from which a jacket is to be made.
