Two themes ran through the AGM: communication, the keynote of President Sheila Smith's opening address, and volunteers. Sheila emphasised that communication within Guilds is straightforward, because members know each other, but the Guild Committees need to ensure members receive news from the Association. Members frequently ask of the Association: 'What do they do?', reflecting a 'them and us' attitude, so improved communication between the General Purposes Committee (GPC) and Guild members is needed. It is also important for the Guilds and Association to communicate with a wider public by organising or participating in local and national events, especially with increased public interest in crafts. The Journal, 'a really professional production', is a major means of communication.
