Silk handkerchief blanks are available in many silk weights. The ones I buy measure 28 x 28 cm (11 × 11 in). They are hand-rolled so you don't need to finish them and I like to buy a crepe de Chine 12. I stretch them on a frame and dye them using leftover silk dyes. You can use any appropriate technique you want: the one shown in the picture is dyed using concentrically placed blobs of steam-fix silk dye. Once steamed and washed, I place a handful of dried lavender in the centre of the handkerchief, gather up the corners and tie the top firmly closed with a scrap of dyed silk cord, dyed ribbon, or whatever is handy. I incorporate a gift tag into the tying. You can of course use any fabric scraps from leftover projects although you may need to hem them first. You can easily find a variety of patterns or templates for patchwork bags. The ones in the picture are formed from four separate silk scraps, dyed and plain, all left over from various projects or taken from the 'Oops' basket. If the silk is very fine I use an iron-on fabric stiffener. They have an equivalent lining of fine silk but I don't stiffen this.
