Boat Shuttles - How to choose the best one for your project

Boat shuttles come in many sizes, shapes and weights. Knowing which one to choose for a project makes weaving faster, edges smoother, the draw-in decrease and the hand less fatigued, yet most weavers choose the same shuttle over and over for all projects. The most common shuttle is the universal boat shuttle. This shuttle might be included when you buy a new loom and is the first exposure most weavers have to a shuttle holding a wound bobbin. The universal boat shuttle weighs about 150 grams and is about 30 cm long and 3.5 cm high. It has curved ends and is made of hardwood, usually maple. The ends curve towards the weaver, away from the shuttle race on the loom. (The shuttle race is the piece of wood supporting the reed in the beater and is designed to have the shuttle 'race' along it).
