World Textile Day

The World Textile Day in Saltford was a modestly sized show packing a lot into a small space. Stallholders displayed and sold textiles from Peru, Egypt, Japan, Africa, the Middle East and Indonesia. Visitors could buy lengths of cloth, old and new garments, fat quarters and hangings. The day included two talks by textile collectors - great value at £2 a ticket. I attended the afternoon session on Islamic Textiles given by John Gillow. It is a measure of the depth of his knowledge and the range of his collection that many of his slides caused audible 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' in the audience. Three textiles in particular caught my attention.
