Craft Now

The Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead is well-known for its contemporary craft collection, some of which is on permanent display in two side galleries. The gallery has assembled its collection since the 1970s, although inevitably this became more difficult in the years of public austerity after 2008. Fortunately for the museum and the public, an earlier grant of £150,000 by the Northern Rock Foundation enabled Shipley to establish a craft acquisition fund. This money has been spent on 22 newly made craft objects, in the categories of ceramics, textiles, furniture, glass and metal. These were on display in the main gallery.
