As an experienced knitter, I've attempted to put myself in the shoes of someone who has never knitted but would like to try. Does the book succeed in its stated object of teaching the basic stitches and techniques? Yes, emphatically so. It is informative, serious when it needs to be - such as in correctly stressing the importance of gauge swatches - but also light in tone and never patronising. The book has a flavour of 'you can do this, if you want to' without falsely pretending that everyone will find knitting easy.
