To maintain an even tension, it is important to separate layers of warp threads when winding a warp chain onto the back beam of your loom. Some people advocate the use of warp sticks, but if you don't have sufficient to hand, or prefer to use strong paper, an unused roll of wallpaper works well, and is much easier than trying to insert individual sheets of paper while maintaining continual tension on the warp. The roll can be placed on the floor under the back beam and will automatically unroll as the warp is wound on. As weaving progresses and the warp is advanced, the wallpaper can be rewound back onto the roll. The wallpaper used should not be pre-pasted, embossed, flocked or have an uneven surface - a thick lining paper is ideal.
