This is a well-written practical guide to many traditional Andean textile techniques, now being studied by a new generation of young enthusiasts at the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco. The range of techniques covered in this relatively slim book include spindle spinning; several methods of intricate warp-faced weaving on surprisingly basic backstrap looms; resist dyeing; cast-on, motif and border knitting methods; and several useful finishes such as borders, seams, tassels, pom-poms and braids. Practical step-by-step instructions are provided for each technique with ample clear photographs; these are straightforward and easy to understand. Reading through clarified a few points on techniques I had previously learned; the information is potentially useful for all warp-faced weavers. A glossary of local textile terminology is listed at the start of each section with interesting background historical information and photographs of typical brightly-coloured striking textiles.
