摘要

The Wardle family of Leek in Staffordshire were highly influential in textile production in the latter half of the nineteenth century. They made major contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement through the materials and work they produced. Thomas Wardle was internationally renowned for his work with dyes and hand-block printing, and for his contribution to the Anglo-Indian silk trade. His wife Elizabeth, a highly skilled embroiderer with an international profile, was instrumental in the development of the Leek Embroidery Society. In 1886 the Society created the well-known facsimile of the Bayeux Tapestry, now on display in Reading Museum.
