Originating in Japan, Sakiori was a method of rag weaving found in rural communities from the 18th to mid-20th centuries which was used to weave work garments and utilitarian textiles. In her introduction, the author outlines the key differences between traditional Western and Japanese approaches to rag weaving. In the West, rag weaving grew out of a sense of frugality, whereas in Japan, where historically fibres were harder to come by, it was rooted in necessity. The author brings these two approaches together to found Western Sakiori, a process that encourages conservation and creativity.
