Generators of urbanity - a new paradigm for urban street design

While both the 19th and the 20th centuries saw much urban expansion, the patterns produced by development in the two eras are significantly different. Together with the older, medieval fabric of cities, the 19th-century urban pattern composes some of the most urbane and successful areas of today's cities, and has been shown to support and encourage a diverse, transit-friendly, human-scaled, and walkable urban environment. On the other hand, many areas built in the second half of the 20th century have become degraded.
