摘要

We are pleased to introduce this special issue on "Spatial Dimensions of Labor Markets." The critical role of employment as a driver and manifestation of economic growth has long prompted extensive study of labor markets. Spatial dimensions of development are also central drivers of productivity, an idea that has contributed to extensive work on agglomeration economies. This special issue ties these and related ideas together and highlights the important role of spatial dimensions in labor markets. The nine papers address questions ranging from female labor supply, the role of commuting costs and proximity to child care; returns to education and drivers of innovation, unemployment and bargaining, labor market networks, links between labor and housing markets, and the influence of local public policy. Together, these papers provide a remarkable focal point that illustrates the important role that space and proximity play in labor markets and the richness of the current research frontier on the topic.
