After more than a century of intensive suburban development, followed by waves of critical thinking about American cities, pioneered by Jane Jacobs (Jacobs, 1961), this book is a timely publication at a time when American urbanists need to consider options for what should be done with the vast and ever changing suburbs. Rather than a proposition for yet another case for stopping suburban development or even new approaches to create new suburbs, the focus in this book is about 'retrofitting' existing suburbs to become a viable resource for creating sustainable urbanism in the 21st century.
