摘要

At a time when urban design has come back to the fore and big projects are remaking North American cities, the most exciting developments might be happening at the margins of the field. While design practices tackle massive redevelopment sites generated from cleared public housing, post-industrial brownfields, post-maritime waterfronts and district scale initiatives, it is projects far smaller in scale and scope that may offer the field's most potentially vital future. Yet this future, counterintuitively, is one in which urban designers, planners and architects do not lead but rather play a supporting role to energized citizens poised to take on their cities' vexing design flaws, inefficiencies, outdated laws and environments sorely lacking in livability, or exploit the hidden opportunities that only they can see.
