摘要

In the final footnote of this thick, marvellous book, editors Vikas Metha and Danilo Palazzo of the University of Cincinnati School of Planning acknowledge the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between private space and public space. The former has provided a safe refuge, the latter potentially dangerous places to avoid, in 2020 and perhaps beyond. The note, clearly added in the final stages in the publication process, provides an ironic twist to a book largely devoted to the positive attributes and potentials of public space. In many ways, the coronavirus outbreak makes Companion to Public Space even more relevant and timely as we contemplate the public realm after a COVID-19 vaccine has been delivered and is widely available.
