Designing for people and place in shrinking cities

摘要

Shrinking cities confront the urban designer with a variety of challenges. Chief among them is the novel physical condition of the shrinking city, a condition in which vacant parcels and abandoned buildings are often common. Urban designers need to develop formal strategies that address this novel condition. However, the populations and institutions of the shrinking city demand equal attention from urban designers desirous of seeing proposals realized. Reminding urban designers of the need to focus on people as well as form is valuable, and it is precisely this double reminder that Professor Saehoon Kim (2018) provides in his paper.
