Tramways have become (again) a key mode of public transport in a number of major cities in France, leading to governmental incentives to research their implications in the transformation of the spatial, social or institutional organisation of the city. Le Tramway dans la ville results from a 2008-10 study responding to a nationwide call for projects from the Plan Urbanisme Construction Architecture. The study analyses how tramway planning projects are constructed and how they in turn construct the city collectively and 'in a logic of co-production of the city' (p. 12). The book comprises twelve contributions and benefits from an original interdisciplinary approach, including sociologists, urban planners, geographers, political scientists and architects.
