Dr Duncan Redford, the senior research fellow in modern naval history at the National Museum of the Royal Navy and honorary senior research fellow at the University of Portsmouth, has produced in this volume a pioneering collection of scholarly essays. He and his collaborators examine a range of the cultural and social identities that workers have adopted as a result of their employment in ships at sea. Although associated with the navy, Redford correctly identifies naval affairs as only one of several sub-sets of the broader field of maritime history. He notes that this field is no longer the refuge of those who are immersed in the minutiae of ship construction and battles, but rather it has become a wide subject that has been opened up to an extensive range of new insights and approaches. In addition to political, military, economic, and diplomatic history, art, social, and cultural studies have also entered the field. Historians have recently taken up the study of various types of identities, but until this work appeared they have not considered the maritime world in any detail.
