摘要

This article describes the detailed organisation and management of the journey of Anne of Denmark, queen consort of James I, from Scotland to Windsor in June 1603. The scale and the role of the queen's escort of noblemen, noblewomen and servants, the means of transport employed and the accommodation provided during the journey are reconstructed and analysed. In addition to over 200 horses the procession included several vehicles. Among the latter was the royal coach, drawn by four horses and attended by the queen's coachmen and the royal coachmaker. Excluding the royal family itself, the queen's train included more than 200 people. Her escort set out from Whitehall on 2 May and arrived in Windsor almost nine weeks later on 30 June 1603.
