There are numerous studies of Germany's Autobahn programme 1933-45. An aspect that has been almost completley neglected is its relation to the Nazi regime's declared aim of developing tourism. This article opens debate on the connection between Autobahn construction and the growth of the tourist trade. Taking the example of the new motorway from Munich to Salzburg, it examines the volume and character of the traffic it attracted in the form of private cars and public transport.
