The role of business in the development of US cities

The International Downtown Association (IDA) is a not-for-profit association - an NGO - based in Washington, DC. It was established in 1956 as a means of sharing information and experiences among several locally based like-minded business organisations. These were formed to advance revitalisation of the historic centres of their own cities. They emerged largely as a result of traditional business-supported chambers of commerce or metropolitan economic development organisations expanding their attention to include fast-growing suburban districts at the cities' edge.
