For many years, it has been assumed that the best way to communicate with an extraterrestrial civilization was through electromagnetic radiation — typically at radio wavelengths. Chris Rose of Rutgers University and his colleague Greg Wright show that from the perspective of energy efficiency it actually is better to send physical artifacts, like the records sent on the Voyager spacecraft (see the September 2 issue of Nature).
