ECHOES FROM THE PULPIT: A PREACHER AGAINST GALILEO'S ASTRONOMY (1610-1615)

The instant success of Galileo's Sidereus nuncius was met with angry dissent by some prominent members of the Florentine clergy. Although Galileo was strongly shielded by Grand Duke Cosimo II, they stressed the dangers inherent in the telescope, claiming the new astronomy posed a real threat to religious creeds and to the authority of the Roman Church.
