We appreciate Ice et al. (this issue) responding to our recent paper examining the relationship between timber harvest and stream temperatures (Pollock et al., 2009). That they took the time to comment on our findings speaks to the importance of the subject. Ice et al. are critical of our paper and question our methodology, yet agree with our most central conclusion, that stream temperatures are influenced by forest harvest activities outside of the immediate upstream riparian forest. Further, they agree with our proposed mechanism for explaining this relationship; forest harvest activities that trigger channel-scouring landslides can convert alluvial channels to bedrock channels, thus reducing hyporheic exchange and contributing to increased stream temperatures.
