Digital Dead End: Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age

Fighting for social justice in the information age entails more than providing technology and training to "have-nots" who live on the "wrong side" of the digital divide; it requires a profound reconsideration of citizenship, policy, education, and technology and how they intersect. This is the core of the argument made by the author of this book, Virginia Eubanks, who is on the faculty of the University at Albany's (SUNY) Department of Women's Studies. In Digital Dead End, which was written to "appeal to both academic and popular audiences" (p. xii), she brings a science and technology studies (STS) approach to an examination of the digital divide. Eubanks uses as her working example, and sometimes also as her lens, the project on which she based her dissertation in STS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: the "Women at the YWCA Making Social Movement (WYMSM)" group and its subsequent offshoots.
