There is a possibility that haunts the chemists who develop drugs to address our most persistent and pressing diseases: that the molecule they are looking for is already out there, already synthesized, and they just do not know it yet. It is this scenario that has made DNA-encoded libraries such a hot area of research: the technique promises to allow screening of millions, billions, or even trillions of compounds against drug targets. However, to date it is been a challenge to bring this method of DNA-encoded libraries into live cells.
