This study, which was aimed at synthesizing a constrained β-turn analog, has produced a remarkable example of self-recognition between relatively unconstrained secondary amides in preference to a preoriented secondary lactarn. It illustrates how molecular recognition phenomena are crucially dependent on molecular structure, as the inversion of a single stereocenter (1→ 2) almost completely removes the tendency for association and reverses the relative orientation of the halves of the dimer.
