Mechanochemistry is the study of force-induced scission of covalent bonds. Selective force-induced bond scission has been demonstrated in a variety of chemical moieties called mechanophores. Solution sonication studies and mechanical analysis of solid polymers has allowed for the identification of these inherently reactive molecular structures.
