摘要

Most of the work on friction in textiles considers fabric-fabric friction under medium-to-high normal forces. This study investigates friction between apparel fabrics and three engineering surfaces (i.e. aluminium, Formica, and rubber) under zero or low applied normal forces. Several factors, such as the surface roughness, the number of traverses, the normal pressure, and the sliding velocity, are found to influence the frictional force. Wilson's model relating friction to normal force is applied to fabrics sliding on solid surfaces and found to correlate closely with the nature of the sliding surface. The velocity-dependence of friction is modelled with an empirical tribology law describing the Stribeck effect.
