Several series of gas-puffed experiments were performed on the large POSEIDON plasma focus (PF) within a German-Polish collaboration. The configuration of the gas injection system was improved: 24 miniature (2 mm dia.) tilted nozzles formed a convergent conical gas target at the end of the inner electrode (anode). The interaction of the radially converging current sheath with such a target was investigated by means of Different diagnostic techniques. It was found that the improved gas puffing allows PF discharges to be realized With a large amount of heavy gases, e.g. Ar or N_2.
