Discussion of 'Inelastic Buckling of Reinforcing Bars' by Sungjin Bae, Alexa M. Mieses, and Oguzhan Bayrak

The authors address an important subject related to the structural behavior of RC structures. However, in order to understand the paper's findings, the authors might consider elaboration of the following issues.rn1. One assumption used by the authors in the elaboration of the proposed analytical model is that "After the yield strength, the bar begins to buckle...." The discusser believes that such assumption needs to be based on some evidence, either analytical or experimental. The paper does not show any of these evidences. In a previous experimental research on the subject using steel coupons (Rodriguez et al. 1999), the discusser and coworkers have proposed a very different definition of onset of buckling. This issue needs to be clarified.
