The study looks at India's rise as an influential state in international politics since 1998, when India conducted its nuclear tests. Kapur regards the tests as pivotal to India being accepted as an important player in the international system. Unlike others who look at the rise of India as a gradual process, Kapur views it as the result of a bold strategic re-orientation in 1998.
