61 Hours is the most recent novel in the Jack Reacher series of investigative crime books. The plot concerns, amongst other things, the use of a secret cold-war facility to store large amounts of 1940s produced amphetamine drug. Originally intended for the use of aircrew the stock of drug is being targeted by various criminal gangs. At the very end of the book, after 400 absorbing pages, a devastating fire destroys the drug and the fumes are carried by the wind over most of a neighbouring town. The explanation offered for the resultant effect on the populace is detailed on the penultimate page of the book.
