Synthesis and application of an azo dye containing a β-sulphatoethylsulphonyl and a dimercaptotriazinyl group: an attempt to achieve 100% fixation to cellulose

An azo dye containing a β-sulphatoethylsulphonyl and a dimercaptotriazinyl group has been synthesised. Application to cellulose under exhaust and pad-batch conditions gave virtually quantitative levels of exhaustion and 'fixation'. Spectral, chromatographic, solubility and chemical evidence suggest dye immobilisation via a polymerisation mechanism rather than by covalent bond fixation.
