Intelligence Revealed: Maps, Plans and Views at Horse Guards and the War Office, 1800-1880

Intelligence Revealed follows Crispin Jewitt's 1992 work, Maps for Empire: The first 2,000 numbered War Office Maps, 1881-1905, also published by The British Library. In focussing on the preceding 80 years, a period which saw the creation of the Depot of Military Knowledge in 1803 and the subsequent re-organisation of military map production through the War Office, this companion volume not only provides a basis for locating the whereabouts of over 1500 items held in a number of disparate locations today, but also offers a guide to the developing story of British military mapping set against a background of changing national imperatives and global military campaigns, from the Mysore and Maratha Wars of 1792-1804 to the Basuto Gun War of 1880-1881. Indeed, Intelligence Revealed aims to offer a 'rich corpus of contemporary topographical intelligence product' for 'military historians and students of the history of cartography', and, if the quality of Maps for Empire has provided a model of any kind, Jewitt's new compendium is unlikely to disappoint.
