Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often characterized by strong entrepreneurial leadership. However, as a small business grows and develops there is an increasing need for the intro- duction of formal structures, systems, procedures, and controls. As part of this process, many entrepreneurs introduce strategic planning systems. An essential component of planning systems in large organizations is an organizational mis- sion statement. This article use Irish SMEs to replicate Pearce and David's (1987) landmark study of mission state- ments in large organizations.
