THE COBRA AND THE MONGOOSE: SOVIET DEFENSIVE DOCTRINE DURING THE INTERWAR PERIOD AND THE PROBLEM OF STRATEGIC DISLOCATION

The paper addresses the general yet important issue of the initial period of war in June 1941 as it then confronted the Soviet Union. There are three aspects considered-Soviet defensive doctrine: its origins, structure and purpose; strategic preemption: the essential tension between strategic posture and operational implementation; and strategic dislocation: the dangers attendant to a major strategic redeployment, one from a static fortified defensive posture in this instance the consequences of moving of forces into a strategic "dead zone" following operations in Poland, 1939.
