Under a NAVSEA initiative to improve manufacturing technologies in Navy shipyrards, we are developing a modular robotic manipulator system that may be adapted to a variety of different work environments and tasks. For this effort it was necessary to examine a variety of different deployment strategies to get the robotic manipulator system into the required work areas. Also, the environmental conditions present in a typical Navy shipyard blast or paint facility add additional challenges to the design process, since a factor crucial to the success of the robotic manipulator system is the reliability of the system over a long operating life.
