The Walter Mercer Lecture o the Royal College of Surgeons of Edindurgh commemorates the most outstanding general surgeon of his generation. His clinical reputation was based on his skills as a superb technical operator across the whole field of surgery. This was reflected in his typical operating lists; which might include partial gastrectomies, osteotomies, a meniscectomy or two, as well as cardiac surgery, such as ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus.
