Mobile robots represent an important branch of robotics technology. Efforts made on mobile robots, including wheeled and legged robots as well as underwater robots, began as early as in the 1960s. Although support to robotics research has decreased from its peak (it may not be true in every country) in recent years, activities on mobile robots remain strong. Consider the annual IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation as an example. In 1996, more than 100 presentations were about mobile robots, out of a total of 600 presentations.
