Great Northern Railway of Ireland Road Motor Services 1925-1958

The Great Northern Railway of Ireland, formed in 1876, was an enterprising railway despite its problems after 1922 caused by cross-border operation: coping with differing government requirements north and south of the border, customs delays and, of course, terrorism. During the 1920s it, like all railways in the British Isles, was feeling the effects of road competition. To counter this it provided road services under contract. Not until 1929 did the GNR(I) own and operate its own buses and lorries, Leyland, AEC and other makes. It built its own Gardner buses, 95 of them between 1937 and 1952, the last surviving until 1964.
